The agreement includes 25.4 billion euros of investment in the country's Shah Deniz II gas field in the Caspian Sea, as well as supply pipelines. Participants included Britain's BP and the Azeri state energy firm SOCAR. It was announced they have just bought a 10 percent stake in the project from Statoil of Norway. France's Total is also in the consortium. In five to six year's time it is expected to produce 16 billion cubic metres of gas annually, six billion going to Turkey, and the rest to Europe. Vugar Bayraml, Chairman of the Azerbaijani Centre for Economic and Social Development, said: "Azerbaijan will have a direct access to the European market and in the first year Azerbaijan will be able to export more than 10 billion cubic meters of natural gas to the European market." The pipelines are the Trans-Anatolian - TANAP - through Turkey, and the Trans-Adriatic - TAP. The gas will travel 3,500 kilometres through Greece and Albania into Italy. The amount of gas coming from Azerbaijan is supposed to rise to 31 billion cubic metres per year by 2026. It was a major blow to the rival Nabucco West pipeline consortium which planned a different route further north. Europe is looking to Azeri gas to reduce its dependence on Russian supplies, which currently account for nearly a third of all EU gas imports. TAP will connect with a planned pipeline from the Caspian Sea fields through northern Turkey and then run through Greece and Albania to Italy for onward distribution through the rest of Europe. The project, which is fronted by Norway's Statoil, Swiss company AXPO and Germany's E.ON, is due to open in six years time. The pipeline is expected to pump six billion cubic metres of gas per year to consumers in energy-hungry Turkey and 10 billion each year to Europe. Nabucco West has said it is now considering reconfiguring to ship gas instead from fields in the Black Sea, off Romania through Hungary to Austria. The TAP announcement came as Russia's Gazprom was holding its annual general shareholders' meeting Chief Executive Alexei Miller, who said Gazprom will supply more natural gas through pipelines to Europe this year, was of the opinion that the TAP decision meant the death of the Nabucco project. "It doesn't exist more," he told reporters. Miller said the Russian state-run company's gas exports to Europe were up 10 percent between January and June after they fell last year by about seven percent due to weaker demand. However he expects profit this year to be down by as much as 10 percent due to rising taxes, lower growth in domestic gas prices and rebates. After gaining independence in 1991, Azerbaijan became a member of the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the Islamic Development Bank and the Asian Development Bank. The banking system of Azerbaijan consists of the Central Bank of Azerbaijan, commercial banks and non-banking credit organizations. The National (now Central) Bank was created in 1992 based on the Azerbaijan State Savings Bank, an affiliate of the former State Savings Bank of the USSR. The Central Bank serves as Azerbaijan's central bank, empowered to issue the national currency, the Azerbaijani manat, and to supervise all commercial banks. Two major commercial banks are the state-owned International Bank of Azerbaijan, which is run by Dr. Jahangir Hajiyev, and the UniBank. Pushed up by spending and demand growth, the 2007 Q1 inflation rate reached 16.6%. Nominal incomes and monthly wages climbed 29% and 25% respectively against this figure, but price increases in non-oil industry encouraged inflation in the country. Azerbaijan shows some signs of the so-called "Dutch disease" because of the fast-growing energy sector, which causes inflation and makes non-energy exports more expensive. In the early years of this century the chronically high inflation was brought under control and this led to the launch of a new currency, the new Azerbaijani manat, on 1 January 2006, to cement the acquisition of the economic reforms and erase the vestiges of an unstable economy. In 2008, Azerbaijan was cited as one of the top 10 reformers by the World Bank's Doing Business Report. Azerbaijan led the world as the top reformer in 2007/08, with improvements on seven out of 10 indicators of regulatory reform. Azerbaijan started operating a one-stop shop in January 2008 that halved the time, cost and number of procedures to start a business. Business registrations increased by 40% in the first six months. Azerbaijan also eliminated the minimum loan cutoff of $1,100, more than doubling the number of borrowers covered by the credit registry. Also, taxpayers can now file forms and pay their taxes online. Azerbaijan's extensive reforms moved it far up the ranks, from 97 to 33 in the overall ease of doing business. Azerbaijan is also ranked 57th in the Global Competitiveness Report for 20102011, which is above other CIS countries. By 2012 the GDP of Azerbaijan increased 20-fold relative to its 1995 level

Baku, Azerbaijan, Oct. 11 By Elchin Mehdiyev – Trend: The speech of President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev at a meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers, dedicated to results of socio-economic development in nine months of 2017 and objectives for the future, is important from the point of view of assessing the realities of the period, Tahir Rzayev, member of the Azerbaijani parliament, told Trend Oct. 11. This speech shows that the fulfillment of the tasks is in the focus of the close attention of the head of state, he said. Rzayev noted that speaking about the successful implementation of many projects, programs and road maps, the head of state gave important instructions. The instructions that were given for the development of the non-oil sector, agriculture, the production of competitive products, the growth of exports, industrial production, employment, improvement of social well-being of people, as well as the tasks set once again demonstrated a firm commitment to the dynamic development of the economy, said the MP. Rzayev said that Azerbaijan’s non-oil economy grew by 2.5 percent, non-oil industry – by 3.1 percent, agriculture – by 2.8 percent in nine months of 2017. “The increase in foreign trade turnover by seven percent, and bringing the level of foreign currency reserves up to $42 billion should be regarded as the result of successful policy pursued by the head of state,” added the MP. Welcome to my brand new Flight Report onboard Azerbaijan Airlines AZAL from Istanbul to Baku Intl Airport. AZAL offers very good product especially in this highly competitive route. I have pleasantly surprised in this sense. Some basic info about the flight: Equipment: Boeing B767-300ER Genre: Complete In-Flight Flying Experience Flight Number: J2076 Duration: 2 hours and 55 minutes Date: 18th September 2015 Check in, punctuality and the equipment: *Online check in was smooth. The flight was half empty so I could choose seat 12A *The flight scheduled to depart at 12:20 p.m. local time. This period used to be pretty busy at IST airport but we departed on time. Even 2 minutes earlier. We landed on time and I had my luggage shortly. *The flight was operated by AZAL’s 5 years old B767-300ER. The aircraft was showing its age but perfectly maintained. Seat was comfortable and legroom was ok for 2.5 hours flight. Seat next to me was empty which gave me more comfort. Cleanliness of lavatory was fine too. Crew distributed hot towels and headsets before take off. Food and Service: *Complimentary food and drinks served on board. Drink service started shortly after take off. They offered different soft drinks, biscuits and crackers. Lunch service followed soon. They did not have menu's so FA asked me before service "meat or chicken", I answered meat Lunch consisted of buckwheat and meat balls with tomato sauce, fresh vegetable salad, cheese and a piece of cake. Soft and alcoholic beverages also served, I opted for coke. During lunch they also served tea with lemon. Usually Azerbaijani people prefer to have their dessert with tea. So very nice touch by AZAL! Communication Issues: *Honestly I would not say the crew members were the most friendly ever. They seldomly smile and do not make so much efforts to satisfy passengers. In the middle of the flight I asked FA for blanket. Russian speaking female stewardess reluctantly replied "we don't have any". Maybe others passenger have taken them already. But she supposed to say something else instead of just "No". Especially male FAs are unfriendly. Inflight Entertainment System IFE: IFE was well below my expectations and general standards. I had a seat-back screen but it did not entertain me that much. IFE contained pretty old movies and screen sensitivity was a bit annoying. So IFE did not satisfy me at all. Seat pocket items were safety card and Azerbaijan Airlines Inflight Magazine. The magazine mostly contained articles about BAKU2015 first European games which is not so entertaining for those who do not have any interest in sports just like me. Generally, my flight experience with AZAL was good. I would recommend AZAL and fly with them again without hesitation. I hope you enjoy this brand new Flight Report and see you next time! Can Azerbaijan be the new Dubai? The country of Azerbaijan is a little known place on the coast of the Caspian Sea that was once a part of the former Soviet Union. The country had the world's fastest growing economy at an average annual rate of 28 percent between 2006 and 2008. Like other small countries in the region, the majority of their wealth comes from drilling oil. One of the powerful billionaires of Azerbaijan, Ibrahim Ibrahimov is in the process of building a series of artificial islands complete with the world's tallest skyscraper, luxury hotels, and high rise apartment complexes, costing an estimated 100 billion dollars to build. The Khazar Islands project is reminiscent of the many artificial islands in Dubai. However, just like with other fast growing economies, there are challenges. Azerbaijan was in the news earlier this year because of a riot lasting two days that happened in the resort town of Ismayilli. Some 50 protestors were arrested after riot police came with tear gas and rubber bullets. The residents of Ismayilli said that the riot was part of growing unrest over income inequality and government corruption.
